Surat, Gujarat · Shadu clay, coir and seed

Bappa comes home.
Then he becomes a plant.

गणपती बाप्पा मोरया

We mould Ganpati idols from shadu clay and coconut coir, with tulsi seeds set into the base. They dissolve in a bucket of water at home in under twenty minutes. What's left, you plant in a pot.

01Hand-moulded from shadu clay and coir. No plaster, no paint.

Why shadu clay

A plaster idol never really leaves.

Plaster of Paris is gypsum. It doesn't break down in water — it sinks, sits and comes back up on the shore. Shadu mati is the riverbed clay idols were made from for centuries, before plaster was cheaper. We went back to it.

Dissolves

Twenty minutes, one bucket

Visarjan at home. Pour the water into your plants or a garden bed — nothing in it that shouldn't go there.

No paint

Colour from the kitchen

Haldi, geru, indigo and multani mitti. No lead chromate, no synthetic enamel, no varnish.

Grows

A tulsi seed in the base

Every idol carries seed in the pedestal. Move the sludge to a pot, keep it damp, and you have a seedling in about ten days.

What we make

Idols first. And everything else the puja needs.

How it's made

Four steps, and none of them use a kiln.

The sequence matters — each stage decides whether the idol will actually dissolve at the end.

Shadu clay being sieved and soaked
01 — SOURCE

Riverbed shadu mati

Shadu mati from licensed riverbed sources in Gujarat, sieved and soaked. Coir comes from coconut husk waste in Kerala.

Pressing the mix into hand moulds
02 — MOULD

Pressed by hand

Clay and coir are blended with guar gum, then pressed into hand moulds. Tulsi seed goes into the base at this stage.

Idols drying in the sun
03 — SUN-DRY

Four to six days

Air and sunlight only. Firing would harden the idol permanently, which is exactly what we don't want.

A tulsi seedling grown from an immersed idol
04 — RETURN

Back into the soil

At visarjan the idol breaks down into water. The residue is fertiliser, and the seed in it becomes a plant.
